The Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon University and the learning laboratory TeamLabs have organized an open conference on queer pedagogies that will take place next Saturday, January 25, in Bilbao. The conference, entitled Queer pedagogies: What do they bring to (co)education?, will be under the direction of Complutense University of Madrid professor and researcher Mercedes Sánchez Sáinz.

Mercedes Sánchez Sáinz holds a PhD in Education and a degree in Pedagogy. She is a co-founder of the Office of Sexual Diversity and Gender Identity of the Complutense University, and professor and member of the academic committee of the Master’s degree in LGBTIQ+ Studies at that institution. She is a transfeminist activist and author of books like Somos como somos. Deconstruyendo y transformando la escuela (La Catarata, 2016) and Pedagogías queer. ¿Nos arriesgamos a hacer otra educación? (La Catarata, 2019). She defines herself as “a political dyke, fat and with hair like a sheep’s.” Read more about this author here or here.

For Mercedes Sánchez Sáinz, queer pedagogies are an open, affective, strange, curious and destructive was of seeking ways to escape from formal education and of being able to create learning spaces that make us reflect on our place in the world, and that allow us to exist.

The conference is coordinated by Mondragon University professors and researchers Amelia Barquín and Agurtzane Martinez.

Registration will remain open until January 22 and availability is limited (registration form).
