The fourth annual Specialist Course on Language Revitalization, which was designed by the Garabide association and the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon University, was presented on September 21 on the Aretxabaleta campus.

Representatives of 12 minority languages will participate in the course, which will continue through December 14. Of the 20 representatives, 14 are women and 6 are men. The organizers of the current course intended to give special relevance to the leading role of women in linguistic revitalization processes.

This specialist course, which will take place on the Aretxabaleta campus, hopes to offer the participants resources to strengthen and make viable the recuperation of their respective minority languages and identities.

In addition to receiving more than 500 hours of instruction, the participants will take part in various events, including the following:

  • Approximately 20 educational visits for the purpose of becoming familiar with the leaders of Basque language revitalization projects.
  • On a tour from town to town, participants will attend 21 awareness activities such as conferences, screenings, exhibits, roundtable discussions with indigenous promotors, etc.
  • Additionally, participants will be involved in a conference entitled “Empowerment: language and gender,” which will be held in Bilbao on October 19.
