Eneko Bidegain, researcher at the KoLaborategia laboratory of the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences at Mondragon University and professor in the Audiovisual Communication degree program, has won the 2021 ‘Jon Bilbao Visiting Researcher’ chair. This grant will allow the Mondragon University researcher to conduct analysis in the field on the information about the Basque Country that members of the North American Basque diaspora seek and follow, and about their vision of Basque territoriality.

The primary purpose of Eneko Bidegain’s research project is to compare news about the Basque Country that members of the Basque diaspora native to the continental Basque Country who live in the United States followed and follow in the analog and digital ages. His research will address the following questions: what were and are the motivations and the channels used to receive news about the Basque Country? What topics did and do diaspora members follow? In this sense, does the administrative border between the continental Basque Country and the peninsular Basque Country influence the perception of diaspora members?

To conduct his research, Bidegain will analyze letters in the Jon Bilbao Library in Reno and will carry out in-depth interviews with diaspora members who receive publications from the Basque Country or who stay informed through digital publications.

Eneko Bidegain will be at the university in Reno for two months. In addition to publishing outreach papers, he will present the results of his research at an academic conference. In addition to objectives purely related to academic research, Bidegain’s time in Reno will serve to develop meeting spaces for research on the Basque diaspora and to identify new opportunities and collaborative projects.

The ‘Jon Bilbao Visiting Researcher 2021’ grant is organized by the Etxepare Institute in conjunction with the Jon Bilbao Library of the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada – Reno.
