The 9th Expert Course on Basque Cultural Transmission (EKT), created by the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon University, will begin on October 15. This year, this expert course that has become iconic in Basque cultural transmission will address the following issues: how do we face the change in era that we’re experiencing worldwide from a cultural perspective? What are the challenges of Basque culture? What value does popular cultural heritage have in the current context? What are the characteristics of the cultural malaise that is reflected in our words? What does Basque art reflect/reflect on? What are the bases we need in order to think about Basque culture: ideologies, memories, emotions, creative communities?

The 'Hemen gaude' project

This year, additionally, the opening of the course will coincide with the implementation of an end-of-course project created during last year’s course. The project was created by EKT alumnus Iñaki Goikoetxea and Maialen Lopez: Hemen gaude. Following in the footsteps of the Basques of South America. The pair, who are from Irun, will leave on September 25 on a journey through nine South American countries: Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, Ecuador, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru and Colombia. This project, which was created by Iñaki Goikoetxea in the 2020-2021 academic year, was presented last March; now the time has come to put it into practice.

Goikoetxea y López state that the aim of this cultural adventure is “to disseminate stories of Basques through videos and content designed for social networks: students of the Basque language, Basque Center communities, musicians, dancers, athletes, teachers, artists and creators, volunteers… We want to recognize the presence that Basques have had and continue to have in this globalized world, by recovering the experiences of the people who emigrated from here and referring to historical, social and artistic relations. A lot has been written about this topic, there are websites and documentaries and other television programs have been made, but there is little material, much less in Basque, about the social networks used especially by young people.”

For this journey, they will use a small 16-year-old car sent by boat from the Basque Country, a Nissan Micra specially prepared for the trip. This vehicle will cross the Andes, head to southern Patagonia and travel the roads of the Amazon. In addition to exploring the places that are related to Basque culture, they will also visit natural areas and historical sites declared World Heritage Sites.

Registration is now open

As usual in this program, the course will combine theoretical-practical sessions with recreational activities. The in-person meetings will take place on the Eskoriatza campus, one weekend per month (Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sundays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.); the participants will attend the rest of the program online.

This expert course is aimed at university students in general (graduate-level) and especially at professionals who work in the broad field of Basque culture or who wish to, as well as at all Bascophiles in general.
