Student body of the Faculty of Engineering successfully participates in the 24h Innovation initiative

The initiative was supported by the European TransferINN project, part of the Higher Polytechnic School, which responds to the challenge of promoting innovation in the cross-border area in order to facilitate the approximation between its regions to the most advanced ones of the EU.

ESTIA University organised for the first time the 24H Innovation event in Bidasoa, on 15 and 16 March, specifically at the FICOBA site in Irún, Spain. The celebration of the event was supported by the European project TransferINN, of which the Polytechnic School is a member.

The aim of the conference, which was attended by students and companies from both parts of the region, was to conduct a dynamic search for solutions to Advanced Manufacturing challenges posed by the companies to the students. The goal was to find solutions in 24 hours.

The organisers’ aims with this initiative were:

  • To bring together and discover competent cross-border actors (universities, technology centres, experts or companies with technology knowledge) in the field of “advanced manufacturing”.
  • To bring together and discover companies interested in "the industry of the future" (both those evolving within industry 4.0 and more "traditional" enterprises wishing to innovate and implement some of these "advanced” processes in their work).
  • To carry out projects involving innovation, transfer or new partnerships between the large number of cross-border entities in Nouvelle-Aquitaine/Euskadi, Navarra and France/Spain/Andorra.

24H Innovation featured the participation of approximately 500 participants, including several ones from the Higher Polytechnic School; Kerman Etxeberria and Natalia Beltrán, from the Master’s Degree in Industrial Additive Manufacturing; Irati Amenabar, Laura Telleria, Ariane Atxa, Usue Monge, Marta Melendez, Leire Perez, Nerea Molano, Euken Ercilla, Mario Belloso, Aitor Gonzalez and Unai Pujana, from the third year of the Degree in Industrial Design and Product Development Engineering, and Ainitze Gereka, from the Master’s Degree in Biomedical Technologies.

Projects intended for companies

The students participating in 24H Innovation had the opportunity to organise themselves in groups of 7 or 8 members and develop project ideas and professional challenges aimed at companies. Among the students of the Polytechnic School, it should be noted that Kerman Etxeberria was awarded the 4th prize for the work “Encouraging young people to recycle more and better”, Natalia Beltrán developed a challenge to improve the WAM process, and Ainitze Gereka worked on the idea of placing of utility poles that allow the arrival of electricity to homes, a challenge prepared for the company Enedis.

In turn, the students of the Degree in Industrial Design were divided into four groups. The first of them, FLOOT, conducted a research on implemented a ground technology that acts as a tactile sensor placed under any material – a feature aiming at people with reduced mobility. The second group, called TRI-ADVISER, developed a recycling system to motivate young people in France, while the third group, OUR BIKE, worked on an application to develop customised bicycles based on user databases. Finally, the fourth group, called SURFTY, worked for the company Decathlon to develop a safe for storing car keys.
