The benefits of collaboration between businesses and the university can be seen clearly in this initiative of Mondragon University and household goods company IBILI. In the 2020-2021 academic year, the two organizations collaborated to choose the five best designs for their new stainless steel bottles, which they selected from 65 proposals made by students in their third year of study in the university’s Degree Program in Industrial Design.

The five winners saw their designs become real products, and the winning bottles have appeared – with the student’s name and the name of his or her design - for a year in the catalog that IBILI sends to its customers in the 60 countries to which it exports its products, as well as on IBILI’s website. In one year, 10,000 units have been sold, not only in Spain, but also in Israel, Morocco, Andorra, Portugal, France, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, and Costa Rica, among other countries.

This year’s winners

Given the success of the initiative, the collaboration between the two organizations was repeated during the 2021-2022 academic year, consisting of the generic design of a bottle. “For IBILI, these types of collaborations are very interesting since they give us an up-to-date, fresh, young vision of what can attract our users today,” a spokesperson for the company explained.

For its part, for Mondragon University, “it is also strategic that the students take an interest in and become familiar first-hand with the challenges of the industry; hence the importance of promoting collaborations like this one.”

IBILI has just put the five new winning designs in its new catalog and on its website; the winners this time were all women. The company’s Design and Marketing team made a shortlist and selected some of the 64 proposals submitted by third-year Industrial Design students at Mondragon University. Next, IBILI employees voted for their favorite designs and chose the five finalists. The winning designs are now for sale in the company’s catalog and on its website, and both the university and the company hope to match last year’s figures.

This year’s winning students are Teresa Pagaegi (Markina) with her Impact bottle; Ainara Urra (Zizur, Iruña), with her Horizon design; Mireia Elexpe (Durango) and her Cocolina bottle; Eider Gabirondo (Olazti/Olazagutia, Navarre) with her Vinikunka design; and Maitane Urkiola (Bergara), with her Marea design.
