During the last few years, the Computer Security area has grown within the Telematics Group. The main reason for this was the demand from companies in the Basque Country who needed to secure their information and communication systems. Within the computer security area the following could be highlited:
Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) The research carried out by Telematika Taldea correlates intrusion alerts from IDS with information from other sources such as firewalls, vulnerability analisers or system logs. This will facilitate the work of the administrator making the installed systems dependable and the response to the alerts more efficient and reasonable. This challenge is faced from the point of view of computer security, applying data mining techniques that will allow an automatic processing of the information and system modelling techniques to allow efficinet responses to alerts.
Honeypots & Honeynets The Telematics Groups makes use of these technologies in order to find solutions to specific problemems such as IDS signature generation, worm detection, responses to attacks, etc. These promising thechniques will not achieve their full potential till they share and correlate the information individually gathered at a global scale. In that sense several initiatives are deploying honeynets worldwide and information is centralised and shared but a lot of work is still to be done and the telematics group is actively contributing to it.
Embedded System Security The experience and expertise acquired working on IDS and evaluation and auditing mechanisms is being applyied to this reseach field. Embedded systems represent a challenging area as they have limited resources (computing power, memory, bandwidth, energy consuption,...). It is necessary to adapt existing technologies to make them work within these new systems that we find everyday in more and more places like mobile phones, cars, or hospitals.
Anti-spam Systems It is well known that spam is one of the major problems of system administrators and commuication providers today. Techniques used by spamers have evolved and they managed to overcome the measures against them. Currently, a lot of them are sent as images which represent messages but in a way that avoid automatic detectors. The Telematics Group is working on image spam detectos using artificial intelligence techniques.
