12TH CIRP CONFERENCE ON MODELLING OF MACHINING OPERATIONS

THE 12TH CIRP CONFERENCE ON MODELLING OF MACHINING OPERATIONS WAS ORGANIZED BY THE FACULTY OF ENGINEERING OF MU.

The “12th CIRP Conference on Modelling of Machining Operations” was held on May 7th and 8th 2009 at the Kursaal Palace in Donostia-San Sebastián. According to the Chairman of the Conference, Prof. Pedro J. Arrazola, this event has supposed for Mondragon University the acknowledgement from the CIRP, of a demonstrated capability in the research field of machining modelling. Mondragon University started working on this field in 1999, and nowadays is one of the world references on this research area.

The conference was sponsored by CIRP, the International Academy for Production Engineering, a world leading organisation in production engineering research, with some 550 academic and industrial members from 41 industrialised countries that have proven their excellence in manufacturing research.

With more than 205 people from 27 countries, and 88 oral presentations, the “12th CIRP Conference on Modelling of Machining Operations” broke a record of attendance and presentations. The first workshop was held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA in 1998, and subsequently the conferences were held in Nantes (France) in 1999, Delft (Holland) in 2000, Sydney (Australia) in 2001, West Lafayette (USA) in 2002, Hamilton (Canada) in 2003, Cluny (France) in 2004, Chemnitz (Germany) in 2005, Bled (Slovenia) in 2006, Reggio-Calabria (Italy) in 2007
and the last year in Gaithersburg (USA).

The aim of this conference was to stimulate the development and use of models capable of qualitatively and quantitatively predicting the performance of metal cutting operations better adapted to the needs of the metal cutting industry. The conference covered the following topics:

• Modelling of 2D and 3D machining processes, using cutting tools with defined geometry.
• High-speed cutting and hard machining.
• Material behaviour and tribological aspects in machining.
• Precision and micromachining.
• Grinding and non-conventional processes.
• Multiphysics and multiscale modeling.
• Dynamics and stability of machining.
• Monitoring and diagnostics.
• Machining optimization methods using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, neural networks, genetic algorithms (GA).
• Evolutionary computational methods.
