Final year project
On the one hand, it plays a very important role in the educational process of Polytechnic School engineers, as the reasoning behind the satisfactory completion of a project in line with their professional future is for the student to have their first tutored professional experience as an engineer.
Most students will have had close contact with companies throughout their training, however, the FYP aims to establish a student-company relationship in line with the characteristics of their professional profile, i.e. it aims to show students what an engineer’s work actually consists of.
On the other hand, the FYP also aims to provide a service to companies, as it offers great value from two main perspectives:
-
The contribution to the company’s technological and organisational development. The students’ level of qualification is very high, even though they are not experienced professionals. This means that the results reached after carrying out the FYP, which lasts for one year, are of considerable value.
-
The attraction of qualified staff. In most cases, the student carries out the project at the company on a full time basis. Throughout this time, the student gets to know the company very well, along with its technology, organisation, culture, procedures, etc. and is integrated within its work units. And the company also trains, gets to know and assesses the student, giving it more knowledge on which to base its assessment to decide whether the student would be suitable for professional integration into the workforce.
The Polytechnic School collaborates with numerous companies in carrying out FYPs, including the following: Copreci, Cikautxo, C.A.F., Ulma, Lagun Aro, MCC, Grupo Danobat, LKS, Condesa, Eroski, Grupo Fagor, Iberdrola, Ingelectric, Ikerlan, Maier, Bombas Itur, Ondoan, Orona, Orkli, Sener, Tuboplast, TVA, URRSA, Zahor, Azcoyen, Berriola, etc.
Every year, more than 300 students carry out FYPs in around 250 companies. The length of the project is one year, and in all FYPs the students have a project supervisor, a tutor that belongs to the Polytechnic School and a Head of Project.
In addition, since the 2006-2007 academic year, through the ERASMUS and LEONARDO Programmes, 11% of the total number of students have carried out their FYP in foreign companies and universities, such as: Politécnico di Torino (Italy), ENSAM (France), AIRBUS (France), Wroclaw University of Technology (Poland), BRNO University of Technology (Czech Republic), Maier (Czech Republic), Cikautxo (Slovakia) and IMEC (Belgium).
