Software & System Engineering

The Software & System Engineering research group is composed by a multidisciplinary scientific team that works on different research lines within MONDRAGON UNIVERSITY. This transversal group contributes to most of the thematic and research actions envisioned by European and national research strategies in the domains of  Industry, Public administration, Construction, Health, Tourism, Transport and Energy . The objective of the research is to offer integral solutions related to methodologies and software development on those domains.


Research Areas

The main research areas of the group are the following:

Software Engineering: The goal of this research line is to industrialize software development processes to reduce costs and improve the quality of the software products. For that, it focuses on Software Product Lines and Model Driven Development as development paradigms. These paradigms provide several benefits compared to traditional software development. Both approaches used together provide the following advantages:

  • Software development life cycle cost reduction.
  • Fast system adaptation to new technologies.
  • Development time reduction.
  • Software quality improvement and software evolution (ease or enhancement)

Web Engineering

This research area focuses investigation on Semantic Web and Link Data methods and technologies, employing open source systems and data (such as open data). These technologies enable rich data structures that are used to:

  • Enhance searching mechanisms.
  • Create intelligent agents for the automatisation of processes.
  • Extract, process and store knowledge (knowledge management).
  • Integrate heterogeneous systems.
  • Compose complex systems.
  • Filter information.
  • Enable machine with semantic processing capabilities.
  • Increase flexibility and standardize vocabularies.

This line also researches on the design and development of interoperable platforms, and the construction of SOA architectures, which enable multi platform-multi device integration. Platforms and architectures are based on web services and standard compliance.

Tool integration and distributed simulation: The goal is to integrate tool to facilitate cyberphysical systems development and their validation through distributed simulation. We use the following standars:

  • Open Software Lifecycle Collaboration (OSLC): for tool integration for the development of systems.
  • Functional Mockups interfaces (FMI): for simulation of different aspects of a system for early validation.
