Teacher Education. International programme. Spring
This is a 30 ECTS study period in Education at Mondragon University [Faculty of Humanities and Education]. The working language of the course will be English.
The programme will run from February 15th 2016 to June 13th 2016.
1. THE AIM OF THE PROGRAMME
The overall theme of the programme will be child education from a multilingual perspective. The methods will include lectures, group work, visits, seminars and practical sessions.
In some of the subjects, the international students will join in with the regular classes at the Faculty. The other subjects are specially designed with a focus towards those students participating in the international programme.
2. THE CONTENT
The content of the course will comprise the following areas of study:
ACTION RESEARCH WITHIN THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSROOM (6 ECTS) – CODE 4.4
The objective of this module is to help students develop professionally by means of self-reflection. Students will be asked to rreflect and research on their attitudes, beliefs, assumptions and teaching practices so that they can develop personal and professional competences.
EITHER 2.1 CONTENT AND LANGUAGE INTEGRATED LEARNING IN A SECOND LANGUAGE CONTEXT [6 ECTS] PRIMARY EDUCATION. [Code LH 2.8]
This subject examines the rationale behind Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), the theory which
underpins the teaching of a content subject through another language. Students will become familiar with teaching strategies to facilitate learning, and will learn to design, plan and assess classroom activities when the target language is a second or foreign language.
OR 2.1 THE LEARNING AND TEACHING OF SECOND LANGUAGES IN MULTILINGUAL CONTEXTS [6 ECTS] INFANT EDUCATION. [CODE HH 2.8]
The aim of this module is to understand the basic concepts behind the acquisition of language in childhood from infancy to puberty, with particular reference to the acquisition of first, second and third languages during early childhood both simultaneously and consecutively.
Students are invited to put themselves in the role of the child and to refl ect on the sensations they may be
experiencing when exposed to non-home languages in formal contexts such as school.
2.2 ICT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF PLURILINGUISM [6 ECTS] PRIMARY OR INFANT EDUCATION. [CODE LH-AH 2.10 OR HH-AH 2.10]
The primary aim of this module is to refl ect on the use of ICT in the language classroom, focusing on its benefi ts and drawbacks. They will then proceed to look for national and international good practices in this fi eld. The next step will be to examine the use of ICT in the language classroom of different schools in the Basque Country. Students will ultimately design a plan that will be put into practice so as to improve the practices of ICT they have analyzed.
2.3 TEACHING PRACTICE AND ANALYSIS OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING IN A THIRD LANGUAGE IN A BILINGUAL SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT [12 ECTS] PRIMARY OR INFANT EDUCATION
The objective of this course is for the student to carry out a project based on analysis of a classroom situation where foreign language teaching involves a third language (English), as the community is bilingual (Basque-Spanish).
Teaching practice will take place in infant and primary schools around Mondragon and students will work with English teachers in infant and primary schools.
School internships will be twice a week (12 hours per week) complemented with reflection seminars.
2.4 BASQUE CULTURE: LANGUAGE, MEDIA AND EDUCATION [6 ECTS]
A brief survey of Basque culture centred on some of its most relevant aspects: language, history and education system, in order to understand present day Basque society.
3. ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDITATION
Students are expected to contribute actively to the work of the course. Regular assignments leading towards a final mark for the subject will be given by each course teacher. A final transcript of records will be issued based on each teacher's assessment of the students performance. Grading will be by ECTS.

There are no tuition fees for Erasmus bilateral partners of Mondragon University. For students coming from institutions without a bilateral partner agreement with Mondragon University the tuition fee is 2.200€ for the 30 ECTS programme.
