Teacher Education. International programme. Autumn
This is a 30 ECTS study period in Education at Mondragon University [Faculty of Humanities and Education]. The working language of the course will be English.
The programme will run from September 7th 2015 to February 12th, 2016.
1. THE AIM OF THE PROGRAMME
The overall theme of the programme will be child education from a multilingual perspective. The methods will include lectures, group work, visits, seminars and practical sessions.
In some of the subjects, the international students will join in with the regular classes at the Faculty. The other subjects are specially designed with a focus towards those students participating in the international programme.
Students choose between the specialism of Infant Education or Primary Education to be kept throughout the programme. Students will be integrated with local students for the complete duration of the course, except for the Basque Culture module. The content of the course will consist of 30 ECTS from the following areas of study:
LIFEPLACE LEARNING (6 ECTS) – Code 4.3
This module is a student-centred module, and, thus, our main approach to learning will be learning by doing. From day one you will have to decide what to learn, why, how, when, who with, how to assess your learning process and your learning outcomes and eventually how to demonstrate your learning outcomes so that they are officially validated. You will be required to complete a Learning Contract Agreement (Accreditation). Similarly, you will assess your peers´ process in this module. From 20 October to Christmas these classes will be replaced by more teaching practice.
ACTION RESEARCH WITHIN THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSROOM (6 ECTS) – CODE 4.4
The objective of this module is to help students develop professionally by means of self-reflection. Students will be asked to rreflect and research on their attitudes, beliefs, assumptions and teaching practices so that they can develop personal and professional competences. From 20 October to Christmas these classes will be replaced by more teaching practice.
THIRD Language acquisition: intervention in Primary Education (6 ECTS) – CODE 3.8
The aim is to introduce students to current teaching approaches, specifically focused on tendencies integrating a foreign language and content. Applying basic pedagogical concepts of primary education, designing and analyzing materials, learning basic principles of storytelling and scaffolding processes are essential aspects developed throughout the modules. Students are required to critically discuss on the issues. After Christmas these classes will be replaced by more teaching practice.
THIRD LANGUAGE ACQUISITION: INTERVENTION IN INFANT EDUCATION (6 ECTS) – CODE 3.9
The aim of the module is to become familiar with the teaching and learning of a FL in Infant Education in a particular context. Students will learn how to foster language development through storytelling and devise suitable activities for foreign language young learners along with how to manage classroom discourse and phonological aspects. After Christmas these classes will be replaced by more teaching practice.
TEACHING PRACTICE AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING IN A THIRD LANGUAGE IN A BILINGUAL SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT [12 ECTS] PRIMARY OR INFANT EDUCATION - CODE 4.5
The objective of this core course is for the student to carry out a project based on analysis of a classroom situation where foreign language teaching involves a third language (English), as the community is bilingual (Basque-Spanish).
Teaching practice will take place in infant and primary schools around Mondragon and students will work with English teachers in infant and primary schools.
School internships will be twice a week (12 hours per week) complemented with reflection seminars. After October 20 school interships will be three times per week (18 hours per week).
BASQUE CULTURE: LANGUAGE, MEDIA AND EDUCATION [6 ECTS]
A brief survey of Basque culture centred on some of its most relevant aspects: language, history and education system, in order to understand present day Basque society.
3. ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDITATION
Students are expected to contribute actively to the work of the course. Regular assignments leading towards a final mark for the subject will be given by each course teacher. A final transcript of records will be issued based on each teacher's assessment of the students performance. Grading will be by ECTS.

Accommodation will be in the area of Mondragon (Arrasate in Basque) in shared flats with other students. Service for students is offered, by means of the University, by an estate agency, "GERTU".

There are no tuition fees for Erasmus bilateral partners of Mondragon University. For students coming from institutions without a bilateral partner agreement with Mondragon University the tuition fee is 2.200 € for the 30 ECTS programme.
